How much CO2 does a diesel car produce per km? In 2021, the average petrol automobile in the UK released 174 grams of CO2 per kilometer (g CO2e per km), while diesel cars emitted 168g CO2e per km. In comparison, the typical battery electric vehicle (BEV) generates 57.77g CO2e per kilometer, which is significantly less.

Although diesel automobiles get 25 to 35 percent better mileage and produce 35 to 400 times less carbon dioxide than comparable gasoline cars, they may emit 25 to 400 times greater mass of particulate black carbon and related organic matter (“soot”) per kilometer.
The researchers compared the carbon dioxide output for a Tesla Model 3 (electric) and a Mercedes C220d sedan (diesel). The Mercedes releases about 141 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer driven, including the carbon emitted to drill, refine, and transport its fuel. The Tesla releases between 156 and 181 grams, including battery production.
